Gilroy High senior track and field athletes went out as winners in their final Tri-County Athletic meet, as both the boys (89-49) and girls (71-61) Boys defeated North Salinas on Wednesday in Gilroy.
It proved to be a big night for the combined 20 seniors as many set personal season bests with one week until the TCAL trails.
Austin Boyd Shot 45-feet to take first in the shot put. Boyd also placed first in the discus. Andre Bufi cleared 9-feet in the pole vault. Roberto Naranjo took second in the 200-meter dash (25.31) and third in the 400 (55.60 ). Jourdan Soares ran a personal best in the 400 (52.15). The senior sprinter also won the 100 and 200. And Ryan Swenor finished the 3200 in 10 minutes, 42 seconds for second.
On the girls’ side, Savanna Silacci shaved seven seconds off of her career best in the 800 (2:22) and nearly set a school record – finishing two seconds off of that pace. Keli Dan (29.51) was third in the 200, Maritza Ruelas (13:28) took second in the 3200, Sarina Sandoval was first in the shot put 37-11 and third in the discus. Chelsey Kalata 1st in 100m and 200m along with 1st in both relays
Of the underclassmen, others to hit personal season bests were: Billy McDonald 42-05 in the shot put, Jorge Murillo Triple 35-11.5 in the triple jump, Enrique Villanueva 2:06 in the 800, Courtney Pipkin long jump (12-3), triple jump (28-4.5) Noemi Rivera 1600 (6:09) Wendy Valdez-Rodriguez 1600 (6:38) Samantha Una Dia 100 hurdles (16.01), Jazmine Villanueva shot put 30-7 Allita Watkins 200 (29.08) and Scott Vogel shot put 42-8.
SOFTBALL
Both Gilroy High and Christopher High beat league opponents Thursday, two days ahead of their nonleague matchup Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Mustangs (5-5 Tri-County Athletic League) defeated Alvarez 8-1 in Salinas, while the Cougars (10-1 Monterey Bay League) shutout Seaside on the road 8-0.
Saturday’s game between the crosstown foes is at GHS.
GOLF
Gilroy High’s Alex Siao, who fired a 75 at the Tri-County Athletic League finals, qualified for the Central Coast Section regional tournament and will tee off at 8:08 a.m. on Tuesday at Rancho Canada.
