A popular event that gives Life Skills students in the Gilroy, Hollister and San Benito school districts a chance to get exercise and enjoy competing in Olympic-style events is set to kick off for the seventh year in a row.
The Gifted Games, previously held for the past six years where it was founded at San Benito High School, will take place in Gilroy this year. The event, which sees hundreds of local volunteers give students with disabilities an opportunity to participate in athletic activities that are normally not available to them, will be held Friday, May 18 at GHS, located at 750 West 10th St.
“Each year we have been able to be a witness to this heartwarming event, which allowed students of all ages and disabilities to flourish in an athletic setting surrounded by their close friends, peers, and family,” said GHS teacher Ramona Trevino, who co-founded the athletic extravaganza.
Approximately 22 schools and 300 students participated in the games last year, Trevino said. She hopes the Gifted Games will become the “jumpstart” for healthy lifestyle practices taught within special education classes in Gilroy and surrounding school districts.
