The lovely Karen Anderson used the highly regarded highsociety@ gilroydispatch.com communication link to inform her local society columnist of a major coincidence during her end-of-summer travels (no doubt prompted by my own published travelogue).

While she knew locals Bob and Helen Blaine would be at the annual Sky High Hot Air Balloon Festival in Pine Mountain, Ga., Karen still marveled at finding the Blaines among the hundreds gathered at the event.

As Anderson explained in her finely crafted e-mail, “We had a good laugh at meeting so far from home. The dozen or so balloons were lined up along the beach of Robin Lake and at dark they simultaneously lit up inside to make a glowing show. The 14,000-acre park was quite marvelous also. It includes a tropical butterfly conservatory as well as a golf course and a number of lovely parks.” Karen, you should be writing travel books!

The Anderson’s love of the south stopped abruptly after paying $3.59 a gallon for fuel in North Carolina (due to prices rising after the recent hurricane). After corresponding with Karen about experiences meeting friends abroad both by design and accident we decided on a little contest that we would like to open up to readers.

Karen claims her farthest connection was made in New Delhi where she was taking off her shoes to enter a temple. Across the way she hears “Karen Anderson, what are you doing in India?” The voice came from a friend who worked for the City of San Jose. Anderson also ran into her boss in Mexico City and an acquaintance on a double-decker bus in London. Maybe the contest should be “have you seen Karen Anderson abroad?” Look for her at a café along the Champs-Élysées (or in a balloon, saving on gas).

Up and coming …

After a recent VIP tour of KCBS and KPIX channel 5 in the city, I’m duly impressed with the Emmy-award-winning broadcast quality of our local CBS affiliate. Airing on CBS 5 on Sept. 12 at 7pm is a new show produced locally called “Eye on the Bay” featuring human interest stories, exploring a single subject in depth. Ahh, television with depth! Refreshing. The show on Sept. 16 features places and people along Highway 9 in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The yodeling waitresses piqued my interest as I can’t yodel (or waitress).

Since the rise in gas prices, I’m currently looking for free events to keep my creative mind stimulated. Gavilan College has come to the rescue! Beginning Sept. 28, the South Valley benefits from collaboration with California State University Monterey Bay’s World Theater to present a free lecture and demonstration series providing interaction with professional artists. On Nov. 1 at 7:30pm, the Turtle Island String Quartet – a jazz quartet of world renown, will grace the stage at Gavilan Theater. Don’t miss it!

Speaking of grace …

I just received an e-mail from Blanchard Ryan, the lead actress of “Open Water” saying she will be attending the Poppy Jasper Film Festival in November. She is currently watching hockey in Finland – no reports of her spotting Karen Anderson in the stands.

Ciao for now.
