Saving the grocery store shuttle service for our seniors is a
noble effort that hopefully will be successful
The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:
CHEERS: For those in the community who are seeking a way to keep the Raley’s/Nob Hill shuttle service for seniors to the grocery store alive. There’s a willing and caring driver who loves the job, and a clear need according to the seniors who are downcast about the announced end to the service. Besides, it does generate some money for the store. Perhaps there’s a way to work it all out with some donations. Hopefully, Raley’s will keep an open ear to the prospect.
CHEERS: For the signing of Barry Zito to play for the San Francisco Giants. It’s an insane amount of money, but at the very least the story should be an interesting one come the start of next year’s baseball season.
JEERS: For the County of Santa Clara which forces troubled juveniles who need drug treatment and anger management to go to San Jose for help. It’s ridiculous that services cannot be made available here. Perhaps the county supervisors should all have to drive to Gilroy for three months for meetings. That would open a few eyes regarding the absurdity of service delivery.
CHEERS: For Gilroy High wrestler Hunter Collins who knocked off two of the nation’s top-rated wrestlers at the Reno Tournament of Champions last weekend in the 171-pound category. If everyone keeps working hard, this may be the best in a long line of outstanding GHS wrestling squads, and perhaps a Gilroy High wrestler will capture a coveted state championship.
CHEERS: For the local sculptor who has been chosen – preliminarily – to add some public art to beautify downtown Gilroy. If downtown is to become the soul of our city, then it should contain art in varying forms. Sculpture, landscaping, murals, architecture … it’s all part of the interesting mosaic that defines and breathes life into an area.
CHEERS: For the push in Morgan Hill to adopt a social host ordinance that would hold parents responsible if they serve alcohol to minors in their home. It’s a necessary step in the right direction. Underage drinking should be penalized, not condoned or encouraged.
JEERS: For the news that Superintendent Edwin Diaz plans to leave the Gilroy Unified School District mid-year for greener pastures in Pasadena. That makes the transition even more difficult, and puts the GUSD School Board, unfortunately, in a micromanagement position.
CHEERS: For the residents who are hoping to save the old red barn on the ranch side of Christmas Hill Park. Do we really need a community center there? Isn’t there a way to restore the old red barn and make it useful rather than raze it. The barn adds characteristic charm to the park and speaks to our city’s rural heritage.
