Mustangs Blank Sobrato 4-0; Finish second to North Salinas for
TCAL title
Gilroy – The Gilroy Lady Mustangs kicked their way into the CCS playoffs on Thursday night with a convincing 4-0 victory over Sobrato at Garcia-Elder Field. The win left the Lady Mustangs just one point shy of the TCAL title, which went to North Salinas, but was good enough for second place and the automatic playoff berth.
“Tomorrow starts a new season. We’ll spend the rest of this week and Monday getting ready for Tuesday’s opening round game,” said head coach Jose Hernandez. “It was nice having this kind of performance and effort on senior night.”
Gilroy’s Amanda Bruce scored the first two goals, with the second coming by virtue of a penalty kick. Joann Olivio-Pedroza scored the third goal and Natalie Escalera finished the Mustangs scoring. Gilroy had 22 shots on goal.
“We’ve experienced a little bit of everything this year. In the beginning of the year we were missing some of our club players so when we played some of the “A” level teams they beat us,” Hernandez admitted. “But then we started league and we dominated early. And then in the second half we stumbled a little bit. We’ve learned a lot of lesson throughout the year. Now it’s the time to put them to use.
“The swagger isn’t gone. We’ve lost our focus and consistency at times,” Hernandez said. “But now its all about the next two weeks and making them last as long as we can.”
