Man gets DUI with baby aboard

Gilroy – A man arrested for drunken driving may face additional charges after his 10-month-old daughter was discovered in the car.

Police arrested Juan Romero, 25, of 9005 Kern Ave., after he rear ended another vehicle at the intersection of First and Monterey streets Wednesday morning, police said.

Romero has two prior driving under the influence violations and was driving with his infant daughter in the back seat when he struck the vehicle in front of him.

The case will be sent to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office for review, police said. Romero could face additional misdemeanor child endangerment charges.

Killer connected to body found on 152

Gilroy – The killer of an unidentified woman discovered along Highway 152 in 1993 may be Keith Hunter Jesperson – a long haul trucker convicted of three other murders in the United States, police said.

Jesperson is known as the “Happy Face” killer after sending an anonymous letter with a picture of a happy face on it, to an Oregon newspaper claiming responsibility for the murders of several women. He was convicted of the murder of two murders in Oregon and one in Wyoming and is currently serving three life sentences.

A complaint has been filed at Santa Clara County Superior Court charging Jesperson with the 1993 murder. Police have never been able to identify the remains of the woman.

Symphony hires interim director

Gilroy –  The selection of South Valley Symphony’s new interim music director and conductor to replace Henry Mollicone, who recently resigned after six years with orchestra, was recently announced. Anthony Quartuccio was highly recommended to the board and comes with impressive credentials and work experience.

A graduate of the renowned Curtis School of Music in Philadelphia, he has participated in master classes and seminars led by world famous conductors Zubin Mehta, Andre Previn, Kurt Masur and Ricardo Muti from 1989 to 1991.

He holds a bachelor of music performance degree from Santa Clara University (1987) and has participated in music festivals, coaching and conducting workshops

He has conducted more than 75 opera productions including opera San Jose and bay Shore Lyric Opera in recent years.

He currently serves as Assistant Conductor to the San Jose Chamber Orchestra and is Conductor of Opera San Jose since 1999.

Come fly a kite

Gilroy – Experience the color and excitement of Kite Flying Saturday, and let’s see how many kites can fly up at Pacheco Pass. The Fifth Annual Family Kite Day will be held at Pacheco State Park, in a big windy field. Action is from 11am to 3pm.

There will be other fun activities including a ‘Make Your Own Kite Free’ table and free face painting, as well as Pie Eating Contests, Bubble Gum Blowing Contests, and a ‘candy-drop’ kite. The only fee is the $5 state park Day Use Fee per vehicle.
