Gilroy – The Gilroy girls’ field hockey team has passed the point of merely trying to win Tri-County Athletic League contests.

With an eye on improvements, co-coaches Erin and Adam Gemar are trying out new strategies and formations as the Mustangs attempt to improve their offense.

The results were decidedly mixed Thursday during Gilroy’s 6-0 win over Santa Catalina in a Mission Trail Athletic League contest, led by senior Dana Schoeneman’s two goals and two assists.

“We were trying to use the game to practice our strategies on finishing,” Erin Gemar said. “We worked on our speed and playing everyone an equal amount of time. We were successful as far as improving the speed (of the game) and getting everyone in, but we’re still not finishing.”

Schoeneman opened the scoring on a pass from Amanda Spellman with 24:29 left in the first half. But the Mustangs (8-3-1 overall, 7-0 MTAL) didn’t score again until Erin Magill scored on a feed from Schoeneman with 5:07 remaining in the half. Forty-six seconds later, Magill scored again off a short corner set up by Spellman and Kelly Perkins.

Schoeneman scored the first goal of the second half on a pass from Amanda Vasquez and assisted Russhelle Preeshl on the final tally. In between, Jennifer Rose scored her first goal of the season.

“This was a little different from (Wednesday, a 1-0 loss to Saratoga),” Schoeneman said. “This was more fun. (The Saratoga game) there was a lot of intensity.

“We knew we were the better team and were going to win. But it’s a matter of playing your game and putting the ball into the goal. We still need to work on that.”
