Neil McCown

Navy Cmdr. Neil R. McCown has graduated from the Naval War College as a Distinguished Graduate at the College of Naval Warfare in Newport, R.I.

McCown, son of Donald and Janet McCown of Morgan Hill, is currently serving as a strategic planner with the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations in Arlington, Va.

During his distinguished 18-year military career, the commander has successfully served in a variety of positions ranging from flight instructor, support officer, department head, maintenance officer, detachment officer in charge, operational support officer and air operations advisor.

His previous assignments include the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Southern Watch; Kingsville, Texas; Washington, D.C.; Kaneohe, Hawaii; Qatar, United Arab Emirates in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom; Norfolk, Va.; and Baghdad, Iraq.

A command pilot, he has accumulated more than 3,500 flight hours and more than 250 carrier arrested landings.

McCown’s awards and decorations include the Joint Commendation Medal, three awards of the Navy Commendation Medal, and two awards of the Navy Achievement Medal.

The commander graduated in 1987 from Live Oak High School and received a bachelor’s degree in 1992 from the University of California at Davis. He earned his master’s degree in 2004 from George Washington University, Washington D.C.

John Nelson

Army Spec. John B. Nelson has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction in combat skills, weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

He is the son-in-law of Virginia Shaw of Hollister and a 1987 graduate of North Salinas High School. He received a master’s degree in 2004 from National University in San Jose.

Andrew Wisneski

Andrew Wisneski, of Morgan Hill, was named to the Dean’s list for academic excellence for the fall 2010 semester at Johns Hopkins University. To be selected for this honor, a student must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale in a program of at least 14 credits with at least 12 graded credits.

Wisneski is the son of David and Min-Mei Wisneski and attended Live Oak High School. He is majoring in biomedical engineering and will graduate in May 2011.

Enzo Bocanegra was born March 30, 2011 at Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital to Adely and Johnny Bocanegra of Hollister. He weighed 7 pounds, 1 ounce.

Lilyan Marie Doty

Lilyan Marie Doty was born March 2, 2011 at Hazel Hawkins Hospital to Caleb and Lisa Doty of Hollister. She weighed 10 pounds, 10 ounces.
