Sure – Taste of Morgan Hill is happening this weekend, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make time for some homespun fun in Gilroy.

Just a reminder (in case you forgot): The Gilroy Downtown Farmers’ Market will host its first Harvest Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25 at Monterey and Seventh Streets downtown. The Festival is hosted in conjunction with the Gilroy Demonstration Garden, which put on a similar event last year.

The extravaganza is coined a “multicultural event” celebrating local/eco-friendly business and old world crafts, with live demonstrations related to solar power, canning, preserving, weaving, natural composting and vermiculture (the process of using various species of earthworms to create compost).

“Our purpose for our garden and Farmers’ Market is building community around healthy food,” reiterated Judy Hess, director of the Gilroy Demonstration Garden on Eigleberry Street between Seventh and Sixth Streets. “We are in the heart of Gilroy for a purpose; it is where east meets west and north meets south. Our goal truly is to build community one seed at a time, and when it sprouts, more will join.”

Hess would like to encourage community members to not only get outside and enjoy the Harvest Festival, but also make a habit of buying their produce locally on Sundays.

“We are surprised more Gilroyans are not embracing the Farmers’ Market,” she wrote an email sent this morning.

When visiting nearby markets in Morgan Hill and Hollister, for example, “they are full,” Hess observed.

With such a cornucopia of “wonderful” local farmers nestled in the heart of Gilroy, she contended, “one does not need to hop in the car and look elsewhere.”

“How can we change our perceptions and habits? I believe it is one seed at a time,” she wrote. “Each person that visits and shares how much they love our market, I encourage them to tell a friend.”
