Jane Howard will lead search for new superintendent
SAN JOSE
Gilroyan Jane Howard was named president of the Santa Clara County Board of Education. She has served on the board since 2005.
“My initial intention is to make sure that South County’s needs are addressed,” Howard said. “Also, this year is significant because we will be searching for a new superintendent.”
The current superintendent will be resigning after 14 years in the role and the board will hold its first meeting Monday night with the search firm. Howard hopes to have the position filled by July 1, 2008. She looks forward to working with the firm to select the next superintendent.
An active member of Gilroy’s community, Howard is the executive director of the Gilroy Visitors Bureau and served as past president of the board of the Gilroy Unified School District.
She has participated in numerous leadership and community service roles as the president of the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, director of the 1998 Gilroy Garlic Festival, director of the Gilroy Rotary Club, chair of the South Valley Hospital Board of Directors and former president of the Leadership Gilroy Education Foundation.
Howard is a past treasurer and vice chair of the Santa Clara County Republican Central Committee and was a delegate to the National Republican Party Convention in 2000.
A graduate of Foothill College in Los Altos, Howard and her husband live in Gilroy. They have two grown daughters and four grandchildren.
As the elected governing body for the Santa Clara County Office of Education, the board’s seven members approve the budget and set policies for the county, which includes 32 public school districts.
The board holds regular meetings on the first and third Wednesday of the month at 5 p.m. in the SCCOE Board Room.
