North Salinas, the league’s defending champion, made the most of its limited offensive opportunities, sneaking past Christopher High 2-0.

Miranda Rodriguez scored with 12 minutes to play before halftime, giving the Vikings a slight edge 1-0 into the break. Rehonda Lewis netted an insurance tally midway through the second half.

Meanwhile, the Cougars, had their fair share of scoring chances, earning 10 short-corner tries, including eight in the first half. Two prime opportunities went by the wayside in the second half, as CHS maintained a consistent offensive push. Maddie Peterson drove the ball into the circle with a nifty slide-step into the center. Her shot, though, was kicked wide. Moments later, Mariah Martinez had her sweep shot scooted out of harm’s way.

CHS goalie Erika Velazquez stopped five shots and the rest of the Cougars defense – Kristen Mank, Arianna Vasquez, Sophia Amelio and Danielle Dias – kept much of the action out of its own circle.
