Police arrested a 31-year-old man for attempted murder after he stabbed a Gilroy Safeway employee on Dec. 9, police said.

Gilroy Police early Tuesday morning responded to reports that a man had been stabbed inside the Safeway store located on the 900 block of First Street. The reports said the suspect had just walked out of the store, Gilroy Police said in a press release.

Derek Bell

Officers responding to the scene quickly located the suspect, identified as Derek Bell, police said. Bell was detained without incident.

The police investigation found that Bell had entered the grocery store and walked into an employee-only area and was asked to leave. Instead of leaving, Bell assaulted a female employee by throwing an object at her, police said.

Another employee approached Bell and told him to leave, at which point Bell produced a knife and stabbed him, police said.

The victim, a 51-year-old man, was transported to an area hospital, where he is listed in stable condition, according to police.

Bell was booked at Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, authorities said.
