Dan and Therese Martin of Martin Ranch Winery with their new, high-tech wine press.

A trio of local wineries were given high praise at the 33rd annual San Francisco International Wine Competition, held June 14-16 at the distinguished Hotel Nikko in downtown San Francisco.
The event is touted as “the largest and most respected international competition in the United States.” This year, there were 1,400 wineries that entered more than 4,500 products from 29 states and 30 countries.
Fifty-two of the wine industry’s best palates – from the arenas of retail, restaurants, winemaking, media and consulting – came from areas including New Zealand and Las Vegas to judge the competition. The judging was based on a blind, consensual procedure, ensuring competitive integrity, according to the competition’s official website.
The medal count for 2013 included 178 Double Gold awards, a distinction given when a wine unanimously wins gold medals by all the judges evaluating it. There were also 326 Gold medals, 1,427 Silver medals and 1,646 Bronze medals.
