After surviving a teetering first set 28-26 at Alisal Tuesday, Gilroy’s boys volleyball team dropped the second game 17-25.

From there it was a matter of the Mustangs imposing their will on the host Trojans.

Gilroy won in four sets, with the third and fourth being secured by a score of 25-18 and 25-14, respectively.

“We were switching things up a little in the first two games,” Gilroy coach Sue Grogan said. “Games three and four were pretty much back to our typical rotations.”

Kevin Bruce’s 11 kills and three aces led the way for Gilroy, which also got valuable contributions from Sean O’Neill (nine kills) and Thomas Costa and Paolo Palao (seven kills each). Michael Leininger led the Mustangs in digs with 15.

Grogan noted the strong service play of Steven Archibald and Alfred Medenceles, as well as some big blocks from Stephen Valdez, Bruce and Palao.

Gilroy is now 14-8 overall, 7-2 in the Tri-County Athletic League. Alisal dropped to 8-15, 3-6 TCAL.*The Mustangs’ next game will be Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Monterey. The outcome will have major implications in relation to Gilroy’s postseason hopes.

“If we win, we will be in a shared second place in TCAL,” Grogan said. “Our TCAL standing will be decided with the Monterey game and our Seaside game on Tuesday.”

The top two teams in the TCAL standings are automatically entered into the Central Coast Section playoffs while any position lower than that would force the Mustangs to rely on receiving an at-large bid.
