I know that a new police station is needed. The old one is cramped and outdated. My problem is with the cost. Why is it that a 50,000-square-foot building in the private sector, with all the improvements, the land, and the construction can be done for $170 per square foot and we need over $500 dollars per square foot for the police station?

I understand that there are technical systems, security, etc. that may be more expensive, but $330 per square foot more expensive?

One would think that, in these tough economic times, that the leaders of Gilroy would be a little more fiscally conservative. The state is cutting back funds, the county is cutting back funds, and the city is cutting back. It doesn’t make sense to me to move forward with this project at this cost.

I don’t know, what do the rest of you think?
