Dear Editor,

Does this plan actually make any sense? I would like your to help me with this because I’m not a human calculator (to say the least, but here’s the situation:

1. The border between the US and Mexico is 1,952 miles. That’s 10,306,560 feet – 3,435,520 yards. (If I got all the decimals in the right places.)

2. How far apart can we station guards … so that a guard could not only see someone approaching any point on the border, but also stop them and … well, whatever …?

3. If the distance is 100 yards, we would need 343,552 guards IF they could function 24 hours a day, seven days a week and IF we can send them out alone to face, possibly, a large group of people crossing together.

4. We have approximately 325,000 total troops in the Army National Guard, but quite a few are out of the country.

Can anyone else tinker, reasonably, with these facts to make this work? Am I overlooking something?

I don’t think so. It is utter nonsense. The stupidest thing I have ever heard was on Fox TV Saturday night. Some idiot was complaining that Mexico isn’t doing anything about stopping their people from LEAVING Mexico and that is wrong. Gosh, no one is doing anything about stopping Americans from leaving, Canadians from leaving or any other country except for maybe China.

But as for troops guarding the border, I am totally against it.
