A highly anticipated June 2 musical extravaganza will surely lift your spirits … up.
“This is the one people line up for an hour and a half in advance,” said Phil Robb, Gilroy High School choral director, who revealed the theme of this year’s annual Pops Concert will be “Up.”
The performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. inside the GHS student center and is worth an early arrival as there are no presale tickets.
Cost for entry is $5 and must be purchased at the door.
Each year Robb comes up with a theme, with the 2011 edition inspired by “anything above the ground.”
With numerous ideas tossed about including clouds, sun, rain, heaven, astronauts, pilots and butterflies, Robb said it will be interesting to see what transpires from imaginations between now and then.
“Someone mentioned ‘moon.’ I said they could dress like a moon as long as they don’t do it,” he said.
The concert will feature five different choirs from GHS and Christopher High School accompanied by a live band, choreographed dancing, senior awards and “a big, tearful farewell” as this performance is the last of the year.
Also promising is the repertoire, which spans decades with music by Queen, Frank Sinatra, Owl City, The Beatles, Katy Perry’s hit single “Firework” and classic favorites from “Grease” and “Les Miserables.”
Robb said the Pops Concert has been happening since the early ’90s and is a culminating wrap-up event people look forward to every year.
“The last ta-da,” he said.
