War with Iraq the lesser of two evils?

DEAR EDITOR:

It was very reassuring to read “War with Iraq the lesser of two evils?” I applaud you for your courage to not wait for the president’s speech Tuesday night before deciding about the war.

You saw through the shallow ideas thrown out by Sen. Barbara Boxer (and others) and saw that the central issue is that the United States needs to protect her citizens. We aren’t anxious (as the senator thinks); we are ready to do what we must to protect ourselves. We don’t need to wait for the president to tell us that there are people in this world that will do whatever they can to hurt Americans and destroy the United States.

September 11 has erased any doubt as to the reality of the threat to Americans anywhere and anytime. We must take the capability to kill large numbers of Americans away from those most likely to use it.

This is not an academic issue, lives are at stake. It is useful to remember the scene of the airliner crashing into the World Trade Towers for anyone who wonders if we must pursue the safety of Americans by proactively removing our enemies capabilities to hurt us. I look forward to hearing the president’s plan and hope others understand the severity of the threat and importance of standing behind our military leaders at this time.
