The first night of December marked the opening of a seasonal homeless shelter at the National Guard Armory, 8490 Wren Ave., near Miller Park in north Gilroy.

The shelter will remain open through March, and officials expect more than 100 individuals to come not only for dinner, cots and breakfast, but also some of this year’s new offerings: on-site social workers and mental health specialists and transportation to employment, housing, and clinical services in San Jose, at 2011 Little Orchard St.

“Now (EHC LifeBuilders, the county’s chief homeless nonprofit agency) will be able to build relationships with clients and help them get into stable housing instead of showing them the door at 6 a.m.,” said Margie Mathews, director of the county’s Office of Affordable Housing.

Officials expect high turnout this winter, up from 3,800 clients last year.
