Gilroy – Police arrested a Gilroy man accused of shooting two people in a gang-related incident two weeks ago on Stoney Court.
Jose Luis Cardenas, 19, was arrested Friday at 3pm at the intersection of Highway 152 and Dinosaur Point Road east of Hollister by Gilroy police and agents from the county’s Unified Narcotic Enforcement Team. He was arrested without incident, and was booked into county jail without bail on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and drawing a firearm.
According to a witness, just before 11pm March 27, Cardenas approached five people seated in a car parked outside an apartment complex at 590 Stoney Court, and asked, “Are you Sureño?” The witness said the suspect spoke fluent English, but was affecting a Mexican accent. Sureño gang members are typically Mexican-born, Spanish-speaking and wear blue; Norteños, their enemies, are usually U.S.-born Latinos who wear red and speak English.
Though the passengers said they weren’t Sureño, the man pulled a black handgun and shot repeatedly into the car, hitting two passenger in the backseat: a 25-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy. Police declined to describe the victims’ injuries, saying only that they weren’t life-threatening.
The police department’s Anti-Crime Team is continuing to investigate the incident. Following Cardenas’ arrest, Gilroy officers and UNET agents executed a related search warrant on the 7800 block of Rosanna Street. Cardenas gave a home address on the 9700 block of Desert Bloom Place in northwest Gilroy.
Cardenas is scheduled to appear in court today at noon. Anyone with information may call ACT Investigator Paco Rodriguez at 846-0348.
