Dear Editor,

I am a member of Citizens for Sensible Transportation, the umbrella group that is opposing this unnecessarily large tax and a signer of the ballot argument against Measure A. In Tom Kinoshita’s letter he got the facts of the recent legal affair quite wrong. As I was in the courtroom and he wasn’t, I can speak with first-hand knowledge. What Mr. Kinoshita said was what the proponents wanted to do, not what the judge did. The alterations to the ballot argument were very minor. Sections were not removed.

Affirmed as correct was the statement that the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group is pushing Measure A to raise our sales taxes to be the highest in the state at 8.75 percent. At the same time they are pushing SB1291 (Alquist) a bill which would cut their members’ sales tax to 2.25 percent.

The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors had a choice to only ask for a 1/4 cent sales tax. This 1/4 cent would be more than enough to cover the county needs. So why is the county asking for twice as much as they need?

This is a backroom deal to divert money to the Valley Transportation Authority, an agency that has its own taxing ability and is ranked near the bottom in efficiency. Vote No On A, and ask that the county put a ballot measure on the November ballot for only what they need. See http://VoteNoOnA.us for more information.
