Nick Cordova delivered the game-winning hit to catapult the Christopher High baseball team beyond host Seaside 6-5 in extra innings Wednesday.
Seaside overcame a three-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh to force extra frames. Cordova’s second of two hits in the Monterey Bay League affair came in the top of the eighth inning and unlocked a 5-5 tie.
Pitcher Brian Ransom came on in relief in the bottom of the seventh, getting the final batter of that inning – stranding the deciding run on third – and preserved the victory with three outs in the eighth.
Cougars starter Mario Talamante struck out seven in five innings of work and left the game with CHS ahead 4-2. CHS (5-3 overall, 2-0 MBL) added a run in the sixth before Seaside tallied the three runs – all unearned – in the seventh.
Kevin Willard and Brandon Irby each had two hits for CHS, which will be the home team for the two teams’ next encounter Friday at 4 p.m. in Gilroy.
