Gilroy's Athena Alarcon looks for a hole in Watsonville's

Anchored by senior Athena Alarcon’s season-high 20 points, the Gilroy High girls varsity basketball team topped Yerba Buena 61-33 on Wednesday night in Gilroy.

The victory pushed the Mustangs to 5-1 on the year, with crosstown foe Christopher High on the horizon Friday night.

Senior Ashlee Williams kicked in 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Kaylana Mah finished with 14 points. Head coach Kort Jensen also credited Holly Lam for her defense and rebounding.

“There were moments that had me thinking ‘Wow, they are really getting these rotations and assignments,'” Jensen said. “And then other times it had me thinking, ‘Wow, We need to really practice that specific rotation and assignment.’

“I am proud of the girls and, most importantly, they looked like they were having fun.”

Game time Friday night is slated for 7 p.m. at Christopher High.

JUNIOR VARSITY:

On a night where the GHS girls junior varsity team played the second half without lthree key players because of a Choir Concert, the Mustangs’ balanced performance led to a 49 – 37 victory over Yerba Buena.

Coach Steve West said he was very pleased with the way the girls stepped up – all 11 had significant playing time and contributions. Charlenne Medina led the way for the Mustangs with 16 points, while Samantha Delatorre chipped in 13 and Emma Leach had 10.
