SAN JOSE — Christopher's Jimmie Lopez is the definition of a class act.

GILROY — The rivalry between Gilroy’s Paul Fox and Christopher’s Alex Garcia just keeps getting better.

GILROY — It may have been Senior Night at Gilroy High, but it was a freshman that shined.

Eight Gilroy wrestlers left Palma High victorious Tuesday night. The Mustangs topped the hosts 57-15, losing only one match — heavyweight Santino Orozco lost 6-4 — and  forfeiting two (122 and 140). Nikko Villarreal (154) and Paul Fox (162) maintained their unblemished records, each notching a 'w' at the bout. Villarrel won his match by pin, while Fox won by fall.  Julian Carabajal (172) had the tough task of facing Palma's best wrestler, Martin Martinez. Carbajal was able to get the cradle in the third period to win by fall at 5:25. Gavin Melendez (108) got a nearside cradle at 1:14 to win by fall. Will Calderon (115) also won by fall at 5:03 of his bout.  Victor Daza (128) won by a 9-4 decision, while Victor Olmos (134) won by fall at 3:45. GILROY — Sometimes even the best wrestlers need a little motivation. Heading into the 2014 Mid-California Wrestling Tournament, Nikko Villarreal’s coaches offered him a challenge — get 40 takedowns over the two-day competition.

GILROY — Heading into Friday’s opening day of the 2014 Mid-California Wrestling Tournament Nikko Villarreal was undefeated and had yet to be taken down. At the end of Day 1, nothing had changed. 

GILROY — The Bert Mar Invitational has been in exsistence for four years and Christopher’s Jimmie Lopez has walked away a champion each time.

GILROY — Gilroy’s Santino Orozco and Christopher’s Navi Pannu were evenly matched for the heavyweight bout. When one made a move the other countered, leaving the match scoreless after the first period.

Nine Christopher wrestlers walked away victorious Wednesday following the team's 57-24 win at North Salinas.

2013 was an exciting year for local sports in Gilroy.
