Staff Report
Gilroy – El Portal Leadership Academy and Brownell Middle School may proceed with the design process of new construction plans.
After reviewing plans, the Gilroy Unified School District board Thursday gave staffers the nod. El Portal is building a brand-new campus to accommodate the growing charter high school.
The school will add a fourth grade in the fall, necessitating an additional three classrooms. The new campus, set for completion by 2008, will accommodate 330 students and include a community-use gymnasium.
The district will pay no more than $90,000 to develop a design for the new campus, which boasts a total price tag of $5.2 million.
For Brownell the board approval pushes the school closer toward the completion of a new multi-purpose room, located on the southeast side of campus.
The facility, also scheduled for completion by 2008, carries a total cost of $3 million. The estimated $80,000 in architectural and engineering fees, will be paid with Measure J funds, the district’s longtime property tax.
