GILROY – The Gilroy High boys volleyball team capped an undefeated 3-0 week with a three-game sweep of Tri-County Athletic League member Watsonville (25-9, 25-15, 25-10) on Thursday night in Gilroy.

“We did a really good job of taking care of business and I was really happy with that,” coach Scott Martin said.

The Mustangs started the week with a 3-1 victory over TCAL foe Seaside, and followed that up with another 3-1 win, the victim being non-league opponent Aptos on Wednesday.

“They are a pretty good team, so I was pleased with that result,” Martin said.

The Mustangs uncharacteristically fell behind against Aptos, dropping the first game before rattling off three straight.

The two league triumphs propel the Mustangs to 11-0 in the TCAL, one game ahead of Monterey and three better than San Benito.

“Josh (Corioso, Gilroy’s other coach) and I have just been preaching focus on the next game,” Martin said. “I know the kids are fired up about doing something special this season. Our biggest hurdle right now is making sure they don’t overlook any of the teams.”

Next up on the docket is an away match against Palma next Thursday.

Four more league games separate the Mustangs from a rematch with Monterey. GHS beat the perennial league power in a thrilling five-set match back on March 30 in Gilroy.

The rematch is scheduled for May 6, the final game of the regular season.

“I know the kids are excited to see Monterey again,” Martin said.
