Dear Editor,
At the Alter Ego Café on First Street, the breakfast club meets at 9am each weekday – mostly retired folks mixed in with a few delinquent working people. It’s an informal gathering which usually produces a lot of laughs.
The other week however, the topic turned serious – to our ignored and under funded homeless shelter at the armory on Wren Avenue.
The people sleep there on thin foam mattresses with no pillows and many times on one thin blanket. Sometimes these unfortunate people come in from the cold, wet and hungry. A quick visit to the facility would surprise many folks.
You have no idea how hard the volunteers and staff work to make the best of what they have for the benefit of the homeless.
So, enter the breakfast club and other patrons from Alter Ego Café – owner Dimitri and Olga. Funds generated purchased a new 27-inch flat screen color TV, and Sharon Halloway a local masseuse went to Best Buy to pick it out. It was obviously too big for her car so she called the chief of police – Gregg Giusiana – and received permission for a female officer to deliver the TV to Flowstar Corp. – a local modular cleanroom manufacturer.
The employees at Flowstar then designed and built a secure cart which will hold the TV, DVD, and VCR and discs and VHS films.
One of the Flowstar employees donated a VCR, DVD, player and presto – we have an entertainment center.
Lots of people helped on this. Thank you all!
By the way – this still does not solve the shelter needs for coats, shoes, socks, towels, toothpaste, etc. etc. etc.
One thousand dollars would supply the shelter additional needs for one month.
If you have a need to help, please drop by or call Julie at 831-801-1162
Merry Christmas!
