Brianna VanBuren does some ground work with Benjamin Amezquita during practice Friday with AntDawg's USH Fight Team at Gilroy Health and Fitness.

Gilroy resident Brianna VanBuren made her professional Mixed Martial Arts debut in Redding last Saturday and delivered a punishing performance for victory at the Rogue Fights Fists of Fire event.

VanBuren, who is the niece of another Gilroy MMA professional, Anthony “AntDawg” Figueroa, won by technical knockout at the 2 minute, 30 second mark of the first period, landing a knee to the nose of her opponent. She followed up the shot with some solid ground work to earn the win.

VanBuren trains and teaches at AntDawg’s USH AntDawg’s USH Training Center inside Gilroy Health and Fitness.

Gavilan hits the road

In search of its second straight Coast Conference win, the Gavilan football team (2-5 overall, 1-1 Coast Conference) is on the road to face West Valley (1-6 overall, 0-2 conference) on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. in Saratoga.

Gavilan soccer defeats MPC

The Rams picked up their second straight Coast Conference victory Tuesday with a 3-1 nod over host Monterey Peninsula College.

The Rams are 4-3-3 in conference with a game at De Anza on Friday at 4 p.m.

CHS tennis closes season with two wins

The Christopher High girls tennis team concluded the regular season with a pair of 6-1 victories over Pajaro Valley on Tuesday and Monte Vista Christian on Wednesday. All of the Cougars varsity seniors who were available Wednesday, played a match, whether is counted toward the team points or was an exhibition match, against MVC. And all were winners. Shelby O’Hara, Nubia Juarez and Samantha Sarabia won at singles, while Karoline Velazques with Laura Freiberg were triumphant at No. 3-doubles. Mirella Lopez won in an exhibition doubles match. The Cougars finished the league season at 7-3.

Gilroy High golf

Cierra Montoya-Valdez, LaTherian Harrison and Melissa Peterson participated in the Monterey Bay League Championships at Quail Meadows Golf Course in Carmel on Monday.

The Mustangs each had memorable moments during their respective rounds. Santa Catalina won its third straight league crown.

Pop Warner

The Gilroy Browns Mitey Mites ran their record to 8-1 with a 30-0 win over Castro Valley in their final regular season game.

Jonathan Rodriguez, Andrew Broch and Matthew Mendosa had first half touchdowns, while Braden Clark and Mateo Garnica added scores in the second half.

 There are no playoffs at the Mitey Mite level.

The Browns will play in the Mitey Mite Bowl this Sunday at 11a.m. at the Salinas Sports Complex against the Morgan Hill Raiders.
