Saint Louise offers new surgery
Saint Louise Regional Hospital surgeons are now performing the Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery – a single entry point in the abdominal wall to remove gallbladder, appendix and part of the colon, rather than the standard four skin incisions used during standard laparoscopic surgery. The state-of-the-art procedure is designed to limit scarring, reduce post-surgery pain and shorten recovery time.
Gone are the days when surgery created large incisions in a patient’s abdomen. The procedure allows surgeons to make one single incision, about a half of an inch in length, through the umbilicus, belly button. Through that entryway, the surgeons place an access port, which holds their special fiberoptic camera and instruments during surgery.
Dr. Huy T.T. Nguyen and Dr. Nang T.T. Nguyen performed the first single incision laparoscopic right colon resection at Saint Louise Regional Hospital on Wednesday. “Single-incision laparoscopic surgery is an evolving technology which is showing great promise for patients who need minimally-invasive surgery,” says Huy T.T. Nguyen, DO, general surgeon at Saint Louise Regional Hospital. “Because there are fewer incisions, there is less chance of infection, less scarring and better cosmetic results, and patients can recover much faster.”
Laparoscopic surgery, has in many cases, replaced the need for traditional open surgeries in the abdominal or pelvic cavities. The abdomen is usually insufflated, or distended like a balloon, with carbon dioxide to create a working and viewing space. The carbon dioxide is then removed at the end of the procedure. Because there is no large, open incision, patients can often go home the same day of their procedure or have only a short hospital stay.
For now, options for patients who need abdominal surgery have never looked better.
