A 39-year-old man was arrested for allegedly shining a green laser at aircraft 10 times during the past three years.
Michael Weeker of Campbell was arrested Monday night after he allegedly shone a laser at a Santa Clara County Sheriff’s helicopter, according to a Sheriff’s press release. A law enforcement officer used the incident to pinpoint Weeker’s location, where he was arrested.
San Jose Police had previously narrowed down Weeker’s location to a specific block in Campbell when he allegedly shone a laser at one of its helicopters, according to the press release.
Weeker was arrested on ten counts of shining a green laser at an aircraft and, if convicted, could face up to eight years in prison, according to the press release.
Just 60 seconds of exposure to a green laser can cause permanent eye damage, according to a May 2005 study published in “Archive of Ophthmalmology”. Unlike red laser pointers, green laser pointers have both the end point and the beam visible.
