Gilroy – Police nabbed two alleged Gilroy car burglars who they say made off with at least $1,200 worth of stereos in a spree of recent break-ins.
A witness spotted Stephanie Almeida and Juan Cuevas, both 25, pilfering a $600 stereo just after 10pm Wednesday from a car parked outside Costco, 7251 Camino Arroyo, police said, and described their vehicle: a red GMC Astrovan.
The Gilroy couple have also been linked to an attempted car burglary two hours earlier at the outlet mall – thwarted when the car’s owner interrupted the burglars – and another car burglary outside the 10th Street Starbucks, reported at midnight, that claimed a $600 stereo.
Police caught up to the couple about 11pm at the Rotten Robbie gas station on Leavesley Road, and found their van loaded with stereos and stereo equipment, said Gilroy Police Sgt. Jim Gillio. The couple could be linked to even more burglaries, said Sgt. Gillio: As of Thursday morning, crime scene investigators had yet to take a full inventory of the couple’s van.
“We may find more,” Sgt. Gillio said.
Almeida was charged with vehicle burglary, driving with a suspended license, and possession of stolen property; Cuevas was charged with vehicle burglary, conspiracy, possession of stolen property and giving false information to an officer.
Both Almeida and Cuevas are residents of Silvia Circle in Gilroy.
