With fewer than three weeks remaining until the 33rd annual Gilroy Garlic Festival opens its gates to the herb-hungry masses, a $350,000 overhaul for one of the famed event’s most frequented venues is nearly complete.
The Christmas Hill Park Amphitheater, host to festival entertainment acts and other community events, has received $25,000 worth of new sod and irrigation, as well as over 2,000 linear feet of fresh concrete for its seating area, said Brian Bowe, festival executive director who is also serving as the amphitheater renovation manager.
“It will be ready for the festival,” Bowe said Tuesday. “That’s the only deadline that has mattered to me all year long.”
The renovations were funded by donations from Christopher Ranch and the Gilroy Garlic Festival Association.
“The construction will be substantially completed by the end of the week,” Bowe said, adding that a much-anticipated 6,650-square-foot shade covering to help garlic lovers escape the summer heat would be installed next week.
The covering will stretch more than 20 feet high and spread out over nearly all of the venue’s middle and lower seating sections.
