Flood advisories for Uvas Creek issued Thursday ended at 12 a.m. today according to Joe Kline, public information officer for the City of Gilroy.
According to Kline water levels in Uvas Creek have receded below alert levels but still remain high and will be monitored by city personnel.
Kline said city personnel have been monitoring creek levels at the Luchessa Avenue bridge, where water levels had risen dramatically by 7.5 feet between 5 and 11 p.m. Thursday.
“This illustrates that Uvas Creek can be dangerous during these events as it is prone to flash flooding,” said Kline.
He warned Uvas Creek water levels remain high due to saturated ground that is unable to absorb significant additional rainfall.
The forecast for the next several days calls for some additional rain, and residents are advised to stay well clear of the creek due to the danger of fast moving water.
“These rapidly changing conditions in the Uvas Creek require vigilance and a watchful eye,” noted City Administrator Tom Haglund. “You can be swept away in an instant. The Uvas and other creeks demand respect, not disregard, during the rainy winter months.”
