Dear Editor:

I wanted your readers to know that I deeply regret that some of the drama class performances on Feb. 6 contained inappropriate material not acceptable for our high school.

On this date scenes and skits were performed during three different class periods – 2nd, 4th, and 6th. The scenes were performed by Gilroy High students for Gilroy High students. In 2nd period no inappropriate material was performed. In 4th period, a couple of students took it upon themselves to change the lines of their program against the directive of the teacher and used inappropriate language and actions.

Again in 6th period, some students changed their scripted lines to what was improper. However, some students were allowed to perform scripted scenes that contained content that was inappropriate.

My administration does not believe that the use of profanity or sexually suggestive material should be tolerated anywhere on campus.

Students that acted upon their own to change lines and ad lib improper actions will receive consequences.

The teacher in charge of the class has been given the following directives to ensure only the highest quality standards are adhered to:

1. No profanity or sexually suggestive material of any kind will be used in a production or the classroom unless it is contained in Board approved material.

2. No derogatory phrases, gestures or remarks, against someone because of their sex, race, color, creed, code, country of origin, or sexual orientation will be used in a production or in a classroom or workshop setting anywhere on campus.

3. When a classroom generated performance in the theater or other large venue on campus is scheduled, no more than three other classes (approximately 90 students) will be allowed to view the program at a time. This will allow for a more manageable audience and a quality learning environment. Any teacher that brings his or her class to view a production must sit with the class at all times.

4. Three out of the five California State drama standards relate to the experience of the audience as well as the performer. The performed material should relate to the standards of the drama class as well as the invited class or audience. Any teachers bringing classes to the theater will be contacted ahead of time and given time to review the program’s content so that they can do their part in ensuring the content is educationally appropriate for their specific course objectives.

It is important to me that the theater be an environment of both creativity and respect.
