No matter who wins the race to be Santa Clara County’s district attorney, residents will be well served. Karen Sinunu and Delores Carr are both highly qualified, well-respected candidates.
On balance, however, voters should select Sinunu.
Sinunu, currently the chief deputy district attorney, is intimately familiar with the strengths and shortcomings of that office. She is second in command in the county DA’s office, overseeing all other prosecutors in the county.
She has more than two decades of experience in prosecuting nearly every type of crime, from homicide to child abuse, from sexual assault to fraud. She has a record of working outside of the courtroom and the DA’s office to ensure that justice is served. She worked in 2002 to improve procedures that police use to identify suspects. She coordinated creation of child abuse protocols in 1999 for the county’s law enforcement agencies and creation of procedures for recording suspect statements in 2003.
Sinunu has shown that she can work cooperatively with other law enforcement officials while still maintaining her independence to fulfill the DA’s crucial role as a watchdog of the county’s police agencies.
Sinunu understands that while prosecutors must be tough on crime, they are also held to a higher standard – they must also be fair and compassionate. She understands that in the big picture, revealing the truth and pursuing justice are more important than winning for prosecutors.
None of this diminishes Carr’s qualifications, which are also excellent. But when it comes time to choose one or the other, we recommend Karen Sinunu.
