Containers and flowerbeds will look especially festive this holiday season if you plant cyclamen this fall.
There are two distinct types of cyclamen, each having different cultural requirements. The first type is the large florist cyclamen. It sports large flowers in clear colors of pink, white, salmon, lavender and maroon. They are commonly used as houseplants and bloom during fall through spring if given the correct conditions.
They do best in cool temperatures and shade. They’re happiest in an east or north facing window. In your garden they enjoy a shady area or one with morning sun.
Mini-cyclamen are crowned with a heavy display of bloom. The flowers are much smaller in size than the standard cyclamen.
Although cyclamen like regular watering, do not over water them. Soggy soil suffocates the roots.
