A Casino Night extravaganza is set for Saturday, April 2 at the Gilroy Elks Lodge. Fun begins with no-host cocktails at 5:30 p.m. followed by a full buffet dinner from 6 to 7 p.m., gaming from 7 to 10 p.m. and dessert and prizes after that. Tickets are only $50 and come with $50 in casino chips. Proceeds benefit the Gilroy Elks Lodge. Call Frank Angelino for a reservation at 674.2228 or the lodge office at 842.9397. Pacheco State Park to celebrate eighth Wildflower Day
Pacheco State Park will host its eighth Wildflower Day from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 2 at 38787 Dinosaur Point Road in Hollister.
Personnel from State Parks, the California Native Plant Society, the Central Valley Bird Club and many others will be on hand to answer questions. There will also be free Wildflower Day crafts for kids.
A Birding Walk starts at 9:30 a.m. and a Wildflower Hike will depart at 10 a.m. Tours are for a limited number of people. Sign-ups for these are first-come, first-served the day of the event. Later tours may also be available.
Visitors may come any time during the to enjoy the flowers, information tables and picnic area. Los Banos’ Hot Dog Heaven will have lunch and beverages available from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. All Wildflower Day visitors will receive a free Pacheco State Park Button.
The only fee for this event is the $5 state park day use fee per car.
Facilities at Pacheco State Park are limited so bring your own water, layered clothing, sunscreen or hat and sturdy footwear. Visitors may also want food, binoculars, folding chairs and cameras.
Pacheco State Park is located at the top of historic Pacheco Pass: Take the Dinosaur Point Road Exit off of Highway 152, 25 miles west of Los Banos and 23 miles east of Gilroy, and follow the signs. Registration available for 5K Race Against Pediatric Obesity
In conjunction with the Extreme Youth Skateboard and BMX Bike Competition hosted by the Gilroy Police and Fire Departments, there will be a 5K Race Against Pediatric Obesity at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 21 at Las Animas Veterans Park on 400 Mantelli Dr.
The walk will be open to runners, walkers, bikers, in-line skaters and skateboarders. The race is timed, but is designated for fun.
All proceeds will benefit Kids P.E. & Wellness, a local Gilroy program that works toward combating obesity by providing physical education, sports and fitness activities and wellness education to children in the kindergarten through eighth grades, according to the group’s website.
Children younger than 12 must be accompanied by an adult, and helmets are required for board and bike events.
Be sure to click on your school during registration process and your school will receive a portion of the proceeds.
Saturday’s events
– The 5K BMX bike and regular bike race begins at 8:30 a.m.
– The 5K skateboard and in-line skate race begins at 8:45 a.m.
– The 5K running and walking race begins at 9 a.m.

Community garage sale to benefit tsunami victims
The South Valley Community Church will partner with the American Red Cross to hold a garage sale to raise money for the earthquake and tsunami victims of Japan.
The community garage/bake sale and raffle event will be held rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 9 at 8095 Kelton Drive in Gilroy.
Participants and local businesses are encouraged to donate items such as books, clothes and antiques. All proceeds from the sale will be donated to the American Red Cross to go directly to the victims of the March 11 earthquake.

Spaghetti and violins at Antonio Del Buono Elementary School
The Antonio Del Buono Violin Program will hold its Seventh Annual Spaghetti Dinner on Friday, April 15 at 9300 Wren Ave. at Antonio Del Buono Elementary School.
Dinner will last from 4 to 7 p.m. and include a spaghetti dinner, salad and a drink. Dine in or take out is available.
The violin performance will begin at 7 p.m.
Antonio Del Buono’s violin program is instructed by Lori Franke and features 80 kindergarten through the fifth grades students from elementary schools in the Gilroy Unified School District.
Tickets cost $4 for kids, $7 for adults or $9 for adults at the door. There will also be a raffle.

GALS Home and Garden Tour May 6 and 7
The Gilroy Assistance League will be holding its seventh annual signature fundraiser, “Impressions” Home and Garden Tour featuring country homes of Gilroy in May.
The walking/driving tour will take place on Friday and Saturday, May 6 and 7 at 10748 Green Valley Drive in Gilroy. Tours will begin at 10 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m., with final check in at 2 p.m.
Tickets cost $25 in advance and $30 the day of the event, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting local children’s programs.
Participants will enjoy complimentary appetizers and a no-host wine bar, along with a Home and Garden Boutique at the conclusion of the tour.
This year the league will showcase three distinctive homes and landscapes, including a French manor, a Santa Barbara style home that’s owner-designed and energy efficient, plus a contemporary country home.

Historical walking tour will explore bungalows
From 10 to 12 a.m. Saturday, April 2 the Gilroy Historical Society will hold its monthly historic walking tour beginning at the Gilroy Museum at 195 Fifth Street.
April’s tour will explore the “widespread use of bungalows in Gilroy,” a popular style “nearly universal between 1905 and 1930,” according to Connie Rogers, president of the Gilroy Historical Society.
