â– NO WAY. That would just prove how whacked-out somebody in City Hall is when the city is running a budget deficit. What businesses/destinations need this kind of wasted money footed by the taxpayers?
â– Believe it or not … yes. In general, it is wise to increase marketing efforts in a down economy. Since the City benefits directly and indirectly from sales and tourism, there will be a positive return on the investment.
â– I think it is the responsibility of the city to be part of the wayfinding project to move visitors around the area. Bring them in off the highway, direct them to places of interest that generate sales tax revenue/occupancy tax which both feed the general fund. Businesses and the Chamber should also participate, which they are, to refine the signage for specificity.
â– No. One who is traveling to Gilroy will have done their online homework looking for places to go and things to do. A good GPS unit will replace signs any day.
â– No! $235,000 for signs is way too much! Where is the money coming from? What budget? All they need is directional signs for downtown and Gilroy Gardens. Maybe a sign downtown to direct people to all of the area wineries. Everybody already knows where the outlets and the retail/restaurants are located.
