City Council plans to vote on whether or not to accept an added expenditure of $47,800 for construction improvements to the softball diamond at Sunrise Park, west of Santa Teresa in the northwest quad, or downsize the project.
The total bill for the project is $92,800, but $50,000 comes from the Rancho Meadows development as required in their condition for approval. If Council chooses to reject the budget expenditure, the current scope of the project would be reduced to fit the current budget of $50,000.
The current scope of the $92,800 project involves three basic upgrades: Replacing the existing backstop with a larger one, constructing two new dugouts with benches along with protective fencing, and replacing the grass infield with a mixture of clay and volcanic cinder fines.
Also on Monday’s agenda:
- City Council will discuss the card room ordinance, which currently limits the amount a player may bet to $200 in any Gilroy casino game, and requires City Council to approve all games played within the City. Ky Phuon, the owner of Garlic City Casino on Monterey Road, has asked Council to consider modifying the ordinance to allow unlimited wagering in accordance with those set by the state, and allows for any game approved by the state to be played in Gilroy, with approval of the Chief of Police, thus bypassing Council approval. Gilroy added the bet limit in 2010 to “discourage gambling addiction.” Staff seeks Council’s direction for Phuon’s request to amend the ordinance.
- Council will also hold a public hearing for a residential construction of 91 single family residential lots, two multi-family lots near Vickery Lane, west of Monterey near Gilroy Veterinary Hospital. The project, headed up by James Suner of the James Group, also includes an extension of Cohansey Avenue.
