A man was taken to Saint Louise Regional Hospital after pulling a dangerous U-turn on Pacheco Pass Highway.
The driver of a black Ford F150 was traveling westbound on Pacheco Pass east of Gilroy when he veered off the side of the road to pull an illegal U-turn in the middle of the highway, causing the small Ford station wagon behind him to crash. Traffic near the intersection of Pacheco Pass and Ferguson Road halted for about 30 minutes while police and fire pulled the drivers from their vehicles moved the vehicles off the road.
The driver of the truck was taken by ambulance to the hospital with minor injuries, Fire Battalion Chief Ed Bozzo said. The driver of the station wagon escaped with a sore thumb and a scratched leg.
“I couldn’t believe how fast he did it,” Winston Churchill, 42, of Hollister said of the other driver’s speed. “He just flipped a U-turn with no indication.”
Churchill stood by the side of Pacheco Pass watching as his car was dragged onto the back of a tow truck, an unlit cigarette dangling between his fingers. When he tried lighting it, police stopped him.
“I’m stressed,” he said. “I need a cigarette.”
