Gilroy – The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association, Inc. is now accepting entries for the 2005 Art Poster Contest.
A $750 first prize will go to the entry which is judged to best capture the spirit and essence of this premier food festival.
In addition, the winner will receive 10 posters and one of each souvenir item produced with their artwork.
The second place winner will receive $400 and third place $200. The winning entry will be reproduced as a high quality, limited edition poster to be sold at the 27th Annual Gilroy Garlic Festival, July 29, 30 and 31, 2005.
The deadline is March 1, 2005, 5pm, and winners will be notified by March 31.

High school diplomas available
for Japanese-Americans
Gilroy – Thanks to Assemblywoman Sally Lieber (D-San Jose), Japanese Americans who were residing in California and whose high school years were interrupted due to their forced removal and incarceration during World War II (Feb 1942 – Aug 1945) are now eligible to retroactively receive their high school diplomas.
An immediate family member can submit an application on behalf of an eligible individual, living or deceased.
To receive an application form or to learn more about the requirements to receive an honorary diploma, please contact your appropriate school, district, county office of education or California Nisei High School Diploma Project (Attn: Naomi Funahashi) at (415) 567-5505.

Experience the Victorian Christmas Tea and Quilt Exhibit Saturday
Gilroy – Gilroy Community Services presents a “Victorian Christmas Tea And Quilt Exhibit” on Saturday, Dec. 4 at the historic Willey House, 140 Fifth St, at 10am and again at 1pm.
View and purchase hand-crafted treasures while enjoying a morning or afternoon tea of quiche, scones, fresh fruits, sweets and preserves and creams.

San Martin – The Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter (FOSMAS) need your help to find loving families for the many homeless companion animals currently at the shelter and in foster homes.

Learn how to start a business

Gilroy – Learn how to get your business started the right way by participating in the two-hour workshop “Get Your Business Up and Running” presented by the Gavilan College Small Business Development Center.
The class presents an overview of marketing essentials, product selection, setting business goals, legal issues, licenses required, risk evaluation, bookkeeping, financing, and management issues.
The workshop will be held from 12:30 to 2:30pm, Wednesday, at the Briggs Building, 365 4th Street, Room 1, Hollister.
The cost for this two-hour workshop is $20, payable in advance or at the door.
