Tonight’s energy future lecture canceled

Gilroy – The Associated Student Body at Gavilan Community College has canceled the lecture that Democratic candidate Jerry McNerney was scheduled to give tonight discussing America’s energy future.

The ASB expects to reschedule the alternative energy talk, originally set for 7:30pm tonight, for another date. Gavilan’s student government regrets any inconvenience this cancellation might cause.

Cold Stone Creamery’s fundraising event

Gilroy – Cold Stone Creamery stores throughout the country, including the Gilroy store, 890 Renz Lane, will participate in a fundraising event for the Make-A-Wish Foundation tonight.

Guests will be treated to a free three-ounce serving of the Make-A-Wish ice cream creation developed by a 10-year-old boy named Cole, a wish child from Colorado.

Between 5 and 8pm, customers are encouraged to make a donation to the foundation in exchange for the ice cream. Donations that night and all month long will benefit the local chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

Event benefits Gilroy Foundation

Gilroy – The Gilroy Foundation is hosting its annual fundraiser “A Day In The Country” at Fortino Winery Saturday, Sept. 30 at 5pm. The evening begins with hors d’oeuvres, wine tasting and a silent auction, with music provided by “Open Invitation.” Dinner and a live auction conducted by Sean O’Callaghan, Bay Area radio and television personality will follow.

All proceeds benefit The Gilroy Foundation, a community organization that serves the needs of local nonprofits through yearly grants. The Gilroy Foundation was established in 1980 to help meet the growing needs of our community in the areas of health, education, recreation, culture and civic services.

Fortino Winery is located at 4525 Pacheco Pass Highway in Gilroy. Tickets for the event are $100 per person and may be purchased by calling 408-842-3727.

Practice riding skills at Bicycle Rodeo

Gilroy – Join the Gilroy Police Department’s bicycle patrol officers, the California Highway Patrol and the Gilroy Fire Department for the annual Bicycle Rodeo, from 11am to 2pm Saturday, Sept. 30.

Children of all ages can bring their bicycles and complete the “Safe Moves City” safety course, that includes the correct method of crossing intersections, railroad crossings, and what to do near school buses and emergency vehicles, and many other skills related to bicycle safety.

There also will be free license registration and bicycle inspection

The day includes free hot dogs and drinks to all participants.

The event takes place at Eliot Elementary School, 475 Old Gilroy St., corner of Chestnut and E. Seventh streets.

A call to all artists and craft vendors

Gilroy – St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church is now accepting applications from vendors for their annual Arts and Craft Fair, a fundraiser for the Gilroy church.

Fair dates are Nov. 3 and 4. The charge to vendors is $60 for an 8-foot table space. Vendors need to donate one hand made item for a raffle.

All crafts must be hand made by the artist.

No commercial products allowed.

Register for a STAR Spooktacular program

Gilroy – The Gavilan STAR Program is now accepting registration for Fall STAR 2006. Saturday, Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 9am to 12pm, cost $99.

Fall STAR is a Saturday morning acting workshop for students ages 8 to 16.

Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of theatre and participate in writing and rehearsing Halloween themed skits.

Fall STAR ends with a final performance in the Gav TV studio.

MySpace seminar

Gilroy – The public is invited to attend a free seminar staged by Mount Madonna School titled “Raising a Moral Child in the MySpace Era,” from 7 to 8pm Oct. in the Gilroy Library.

Sarada Diffenbaugh, Mount Madonna principal and educator, will lead the discussion and talk about the key principles needed to raise an ethical child.
