Dance with your Valentine
GILROY – The Senior Center Valentine Dinner Dance will take place Saturday, Feb. 8 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St. The cost is $5 per person. Tickets for ‘miracle worker’
GILROY – Odyssey Theatre Company’s winter Main Stage Production of “The Miracle Worker” will run for one more weekend. “The Miracle Worker,” by William Gibson, is based on the true story of Annie Sullivan’s heroic efforts to teach her new pupil, young Helen Keller. “Miracle Worker” will be performed Friday and Saturday, now through Feb. 8 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for students and seniors. True love waits
GILROY – South Valley Pregnancy Care Center invites Junior High and Senior High school age students to attend a free True Love Waits Rally on Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. (doors open at 5:30 p.m.) at Gilroy High School. Tommy Ayala will be the featured speaker. The Christian Band “PAX 217” will perform. There will also be inflatable games and prize raffles. About 500 youth from Morgan Hill, Gilroy, Hollister and San Jose are expected to attend. Head east at Gavilan
GILROY – Now through Feb. 28, the travelling exhibit entitled “Heading East: An Exhibit on California’s Asian Pacific History” will be on display at the Gavilan College Student Center, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. The exhibit coincides with the lunar new year celebrated by many Asian cultures. Heading East is a traveling exhibit which documents the role of the Asian Pacific American in the history of the state of California. It has been exhibited around California since1999, most recently at the San Jose International Airport. The exhibit consists of large photographic panels and columns, with text and quotes throughout. The panels, over 6 feet tall, create an interactive space in which the viewer can experience the exhibit. Details: 848-4724.
Firemen’s ball
GILROY – The Gilroy Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary will hold the Firemen’s Ball from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Gilroy Elks Lodge, and one lucky attendee will leave with the keys to a new car. South County Chrysler has donated a Honda electric car for the emergency relief fund raffle, which will take place during the ball. Proceeds from the event will be given to families as a disaster relief fund. The event will begin with no-host cocktails from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by steak and scampi or pasta primavera from 7 to 9 p.m. the emergency relief raffle fund will begin just after 8 p.m. and there will be dance music from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tickets to the ball are $40 per person.

Elks fashion show
GILROY – The Gilroy Elks Fashion Show will be celebrating its 40th anniversary on March 8. Donation will be $25. Tickets for the luncheon and fashion show will be on sale Saturday, Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. to noon at the Elks Lodge on 2765 Hecker Pass Highway. Details: 842-9397.
Sign up for soccer in a flash
GILROY – Teens interested in playing for the Orchard Valley Flash, a girls traveling soccer team this spring, should contact Coach Ballan Campeau at 782-2853. Girls on the team are from Gilroy, Morgan Hill and south San Jose. The season will run from April through May with practices starting in March. Players must not be 16 years old before Aug. 1 this year.
Crab Feed
GILROY – The Gilroy Knights of Columbus Council 2469 will host a Crab Feed at Cullen Hall, St. Mary Parish on Saturday, Feb. 15. Happy hour is 6 p.m., and the Crab Feed begins at 7 p.m. Proceeds from this event will benefit Knights of Columbus scholarships and other charitable activities. Assistance league grants
GILROY – The Gilroy Assistance League is accepting grant requests for 2003. Last year, GALS gave out over $9,000 to various local youth causes, including Brownell Academy Music Department, Gilroy Community Youth Center, GHS Grad Night, and St. Joseph’s Family Center. Grant requests should be a written letter requesting a specific amount of money and what it will be used for. Mail requests to Paula Goldsmith, 8321 Peppergrass Court., Gilroy, CA 95020. ‘Author!’ ads
GILROY – The Gilroy High School Art and Literary Guild is offering a win-win opportunity for local businesses wanting to get their name out and support a local cause at the same time. The Guild publishes a yearly magazine – called “Author! Author!” – featuring the art and writing of GHS students. It needs financial help in producing the multi-section glossy.
