GILROY – The Gilroy High School journalism department is holding a garage sale Saturday, March 8 to raise funds to send students to this year’s Journalism Education Association conference. Chamber scholarships
GILROY – The Gilroy Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Program offers $4,000 in college scholarships to qualified high school seniors graduating in 2003 and entering their first year of college in the fall of 2003. One $2,000 scholarship, one $1,000 scholarship and two $500 scholarships will be awarded.
To qualify a student must be a Gilroy resident and/or attending a Gilroy Unified School District school; have an excellent record of experience in community and extracurricular activities; have career goals in business, industry or education; and graduate high school June, 2003 with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last two years. Application packets are available at the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce or by e-mailing a request to ch*****@gi****.org. Get creative at Gav
GILROY – Gavilan will host the second annual Gavilan College Creativity Festival, called IMX: Infinite Potential, Saturday, March 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The festival will feature a day of workshops on creative expression ranging from haiku to hip-hop. Workshop offerings also include generating new material, breaking through writer’s block, and computer graphics.
The fee for participation is $5 per person, payable at registration. Participants are encouraged to bring a notebook and a few pens or pencils, and their energy and ideas. Lunch will be provided. Young artists’ show
GILROY – The City of Gilroy Community Services Department is putting on an Exhibition of Local Talent, featuring the work of young artists 5 to 18 years of age. The show will take place at the Wiley Cultural Center, 140 Fifth St. Entries can be submitted on March 10 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Wiley Cultural Center. Design a Gilroy flag
GILROY – Proud of your city? Then why not show your true colors – through art. Gilroy’s Youth Commission is currently holding a contest to design a “city flag” for Gilroy. The contest is open to all Gilroy residents.
Flag designs should depict the city’s rich cultural heritage, use colors, be tasteful and creative and may use all or part of the current City of Gilroy’s symbols. Design entries must be 24-by-36 inches, in color and be accompanied by a project entry form, which can be obtained at Gilroy City Hall, 7351 Rosanna St. Entries are due at the Gilroy Community Services department by 5 p.m. on April 18. The winner receives no monetary compensation. After the contest ends in mid-April, the Youth Commission will select five finalists and present them to the City Council, who will choose one prototype design. The city plans to stage an inaugural flag-raising ceremony at the city’s Garlic Festival in July.

GILROY – STAR TV, an after-school performers workshop, is seeking participants for Spring 2003. All talented young actors, singers and dancers, ages 9 to 14 are invited to participate in STAR TV Julianne Palma will produce and direct this brand-new, exciting and dynamic kids TV show. The best of the best will be seen on Cable Channel 18. The fee for this class is $225. The class is at Gavilan College TV Studio, LI 140 in Gilroy.
