Community Services’ Health and Fitness Program has expanded

GILROY – Popular classes like KickBox Aerobics, Line Dancing, 20-20-20 Step, and Tai Chi will be back starting the week of Jan. 6. Several new and exciting classes will bring in the New Year. For men, a beginner Tri-Yoga class specifically designed to increase flexibility in areas of tightness common to many men will be held on Monday evenings from 5 to 6:15 p.m. with Paula Goldsmith at the Senior Center Meeting Room. Goldsmith will offer Yoga for Women on Wednesday evenings. A beginner class meets from 5 to 6:15 p.m. and an intermediate class meets from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. Classes meet at the new Ladies Health and Fitness.

Another new concept is a Saturday power walking class, Strut and Stride, held from 7:50 to 8:50 a.m. at South Valley Junior High. All ages can handle this class with ease. Theresa Monsour will offer a new intermediate Pilate’s-based Stretching on Monday evenings from 7 to 8 p.m. and a beginner class from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Wheeler Center Dance Room.

Artists who teach on

GILROY – Creative Catalyst is an exhibition currently on display at the Gavilan College Gallery, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., featuring artwork by art educators from Gavilan College and local high schools.

Artists exhibiting artwork are Dan Dwyer, Jane Edberg, KC Gonzalez, Jack Johnson, Arthur Juncker, Tim Kelly, Jacqueline Kurtt, Jane Rekedal, Sylvia Rios, Moisés Roizen, Louise Roy and Arturo “r2row” Rosette. Artworks include ceramics, photography, drawings, paintings, fabric, murals, wood and mixed media.

The exhibition is on display now through Jan. 25. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed on Saturday and Sunday. After-school fitness

GILROY – After School Health and Fitness for Teens is a class for for junior high and high school students (ages 12 to 18 years old), co-sponsored by Gilroy Community Services and Gilroy Health and Fitness on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. It will begin Jan. 7 through Feb. 20 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Gilroy Health and Fitness Club.

The class will feature nutrition, health and fitness activities, and students will learn how to make and eat easy, healthy snacks. Students will also learn about how the body moves and the importance of activity while participating in aerobic/weight training classes.

Instructors are Heidi Sanchez who is a registered dietician and Ariana Stauble who is a certified personal trainer. The class fee is $15 for residents and $18 for non-residents. To register or for more information, call Gilroy Community Services at 846-0460.

Garlicky art contest

GILROY – The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association, Inc., is now accepting entries for the 2003 Art Poster Contest.

A $750 first prize will go to the entry which is judged to best capture the spirit and essence of this premier food festival. In addition, the first-place winner shall receive one of each souvenir food item produced with their artwork. The second-place winner will receive $400 and third place will get $200. The winning entry will be reproduced as a high-quality, limited edition poster to be sold at the 25th Annual Garlic Festival on July 25, 26 and 27. T

Join the Neighborhood Accountability Board

GILROY – The restorative Justice Program needs volunteers to participate in the “Neighborhood Accountability Board” (NAB). The program emphasizes the need for first and second time juvenile offenders of minor offenses to make amends to their victims.

The NAB is made up of community members and business owners of Gilroy who will work with the minor, the minor’s parents and the victims to develop appropriate contracts. Getting the community involved and emphasizing the minors’ responsibility and accountability not only to the victims, but to the community is one of the program’s goals.

Things That Go Bump

MORGAN HILL – Have you ever wondered about the wildlife that can’t wait until the sun goes down? Join W.E.R.C., the Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center, for a free evening program at the Historic Machado School located in Morgan Hill.

This program will be from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25. Participants will be introduced to some of the Bay Area’s local nocturnal wildlife. Some of WERC’s live educational ambassadors will be at the program to demonstrate the wide variety of wildlife this area enjoys. The program is free, space is limited, and reservations are required.
