GILROY – The choirs at Gilroy High School will be presenting their annual Spring Concert Tuesday, April 15, and Wednesday April 16. The concerts will begin each evening at 7:30. The doors will open at 7 p.m. for seating. There will be a $3 charge at the door to help defray costs for the concert. The concert will be held at Gilroy Presbyterian Church 6000 Miller Ave., off Santa Teresa Blvd. near Gavilan College.

The evening will include music from the Men’s Chorus, Women’s Chorus, Concert Choir, Concerto Delle Donne and Chamber Singers. The choirs involve over 160 students at GHS. The choirs are under the direction of Phillip Robb and will be accompanied by Ruth Winter.

The evening’s concert will include music from 13 different countries and span over 400 years of choral music. The music includes guest musicians on the tuba, clarinet and french horn. The students have been preparing since January to share this wide variety of music that has something for every listener. Details: 847-4040.

View writing tests

GILROY – Gilroy Unified School District writing tests will be given to students on Tuesday, April 15. Parents who are interested in viewing the writing tests are invited to the District Office at 7810 Arroyo Circle. The writing tests will only be available for viewing on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 15 and 16. The writing tests are secured until the day of the test so parent review can only be scheduled on these days.

Meet special kids’ needs

GILROY – There will be a Slingerland Community Forum on Wednesday, April 16, at 7:30 p.m. at the Gilroy Unified School District Board Room, 7810 Arroyo Circle. They will discuss ways to meet the needs of struggling early learners. Details: 848-7168.

Learn to drive

GILROY – The AARP driving class will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, April 16 and 17, from 8 a.m. to noon. The cost is $10. Call Vivian at 847-1388 to sign up.

Design a Gilroy flag

GILROY – Proud of your city? Then why not show your true colors – through art. Gilroy’s Youth Commission is currently holding a contest to design a “city flag” for Gilroy. The contest is open to all Gilroy residents. Flag designs should depict the city’s rich cultural heritage, use colors, be tasteful and creative and may use all or part of the current City of Gilroy’s symbols.

Design entries must be submitted on 24-by-36 inch poster board, in color and be accompanied by a project entry form, which can be obtained at Gilroy City Hall, 7351 Rosanna St. Entries are due by the closure of City Hall on Friday, April 18, and can be submitted to the Community Services Department. SAN MARTIN – The San Martin Shelter currently has many cats that do not wish to be pets. These independent cats are beautiful and healthy. They would love to pay their own way by taking care of your rodent problems in exchange for food and shelter. The cats will be altered and vaccinated prior to placement. Volunteers needed

SANTA CLARA – The Centre for Living with Dying needs compassionate volunteers to provide emotional support for people coping with death, dying, grief, loss and trauma. Wal-Mart donates

GILROY – Six Gilroy community agencies received Friday $500 to $1,000 each from the Walton Foundation, the charitable wing of the Wal-Mart corporation.

Recipients are the Gilroy police and fire departments, Rucker and El Roble elementary schools, St. Joseph’s Family Center and Rebekah Children’s Services.

The agencies can use the funds at their discretion. Likely allocations include Rucker’s theater arts program, tutoring at El Roble, family emergency training by the fire department and the police department’s neighborhood watch program, the store said.
