Supervisors support $5 vehicle registration surcharge
San Jose – The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors is in support of a bill that would levy a $5 surcharge on every car registered in the county.
The supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to support SB 680, written by Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, which would provide $56 million to improve county roads and train service over eight years.
Supervisor Don Gage said Wednesday that the bill is necessary because federal and state funding for road and expressway improvements is dissipating.
The $56 million would be divided among county and city road projects, with $4 million earmarked for Caltrain improvements and $4 million devoted to litter removal.
The county is the latest municipality to support the bill. Several North County cities and Morgan Hill have passed similar resolutions.

The county will also apply for matching funds from Caltrans.
The county wants to expand and reinforce the runway to allow larger, business jets to land there, and build additional hangars. Any expansion project is subject to FAA review and the county must fund any project with airport revenue and grants.
