Caltrain will operate on a holiday schedule for Memorial Day Monday, May 31.

The rail line will operate 20 trains between San Francisco and San Jose.

Train service will not operate south of the Tamien station in San Jose.

Because of ongoing construction along the Caltrain right of way, rail service is not available on the holiday weekend. Weekend trains will resume service beginning June 5. Train service will be free the first two weekends. Regular fares will be in effect the following weekend.

Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) will provide service on Memorial Day, Monday: VTA Buses and Light Rail will operate a holiday schedule, Dumbarton Express will not be in service, Highway 17 Express will run a holiday schedule, ACE Train/Shuttles will not operate, Great America Shuttle will run a regular schedule.

Hometown celebrates

GILROY – Hometown Buffet, 7950 Arroyo Circle, will celebrate their fourth anniversary on Saturday. A jump house will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m, a DJ will provide music from noon to 8 p.m. and the Hometown Buffet Mascot, H.T. Bee, will be giving out balloons and free meal passes for kids.

A coloring contest is open to kids 2 to 12, with a grand prize of a new bicycle. Those who dine at the restaurant will be entered into a raffle to win a free adult meal, drawn every half hour.

Patriotic Parade

GILROY – Celebrate the lives of those who bought our freedoms at Gilroy’s seventh annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday.

Memorial Day activities kick off at 9 a.m. at St. Mary Cemetery, where Supervisor Don Gage and Mayor Al Pinheiro will speak. Wayne Cegelske, VFW Post Commander, will lead an invocation.

At 11 a.m., the parade commences along Tenth Street. See the CALSTAR Helicopter and P-51 Mustangs fly over, followed by the Gilroy High School Marching Band, floats, custom cars, street rods, the San Jose Sharks fire engine, Gilroy fire and police equipment and marchers from many of Gilroy’s organizations. Cheer for Grand Marshal Jenny Belcher and Gilroy’s veterans.

After the parade, attend the ‘Family Fun Day’ at Christmas Hill Park, featuring a rock-climbing wall, bounce houses, clowns and a balloon artist. Custom cars will be displayed, as well as the CALSTAR helicopter (subject to availability).

‘Office Hours’ on stage

GILROY – Pintello Comedy Theater, 8531 Church St., will present ‘Office Hours,’ directed by Marion Pintello, beginning on Friday, June 4. The play shows at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, June 4 through July 3.

‘Office Hours’ is a comedy featuring five actors playing 17 parts in six different offices who are connected, but in very unexpected ways.

Local actors include Rod Pintello, his son Simon Pintello, Donna Tom, John Brewer and Sandi Lewandowski.

GILROY – The public is invited to join Jeff Garcia and friends for the 2004 Jeff Garcia Open Annual Golf Tournament benefiting the Make A Wish Foundation, St. Joseph’s Family Center and local youth scholarships. The tournament will be held on Friday, June 11, at Eagle Ridge Golf Club.

The scramble play, mixed team tournament features prizes, including the chance to win a new car or one million dollars for a hole in one.

Be an alley artist

GILROY – The Fairview Drive Neighborhood presents ‘Alleyway Paint Out Day’ on Saturday, June 5, starting at 8:30 a.m. at Southside Alley Way, 400 Fairview Drive.

Help paint out the alley way fence and make a positive difference in the community. After the paint out, all participants are invited to lunch and treats. The event is sponsored by the Gilroy Police Department and South County Housing.

GILROY – Local television station Community Media Access Partnership (CMAP) is looking for residents of Gilroy, Hollister and San Juan Bautista to become producers, cast and crew members of their own TV shows. The public is invited to tour the facilities and find out more at an orientation on Saturday, June 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with Kelly Abbott at the CMAP office at Gavilan College, 5055 Santa Teresa Bvld.

After attending the orientation and signing up for membership, participants are encouraged to enroll for ‘Fast Track,’ six free basic and four low-cost advanced workshops for learning to create your own TV show.

Give life

GILROY – The American Red Cross will hold a Gilroy Community Blood Drive on Thursday, June 10, from 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave.

To donate blood you must be 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health.

American Red Cross volunteer blood donors are required to provide identification before donating blood. Preferred identification includes a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, or a Red Cross blood donor card.
