GILROY – Community Services is offering a combined beginning and intermediate level art workshop for children ages 7 to 12 years old. The workshop will include instruction in pencil, pen and ink, color pencils, watercolor pencils and felt pens. Four different media and basic techniques are taught using a sketchbook format. All supplies are provided by instructor JoAnne Robinson. Robinson is a local artist who has been painting, drawing and creating for more than 20 years. She has sold many commissioned and original designs and has won numerous awards for her art. Workshops will be Wednesdays, Jan. 22 and Feb. 12 from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. at the Willey Cultural Center. Pintellos present premiere

Route 152 lanes closed

Self-esteem seminar

GILROY – A goal-focused self-esteem seminar for women will be held Saturday, Jan. 25 from 12:45 to 4 p.m. at the Ladies Health and Fitness Center, 8120 Westwood Drive in Gilroy. ‘American Ideal’ opens

GILROY – John Bisceglie’s newest musical, “American Ideal,” opens production on Friday, Jan. 24 at Old City Hall in Gilroy. Performances run Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. through Feb. 16 with two bonus Sunday shows at 6 p.m. on Feb. 9 and 16. All seats are $10. Get tickets for ‘Miracle worker’

GILROY – Odyssey Theatre Company’s winter Main Stage Production of “The Miracle Worker” will open Jan. 24, in the Gilroy High School Theatre and run for three weekends. “The Miracle Worker,” by William Gibson, is based on the true story of Annie Sullivan’s heroic efforts to teach her new pupil, young Helen Keller. “Miracle Worker” will be performed Friday and Saturdays, Jan. 24 to Feb. 8 at 8 p.m., with a Sunday matinee Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for students and seniors. Artists who teach on exhibit

GILROY – Creative Catalyst is an exhibition currently on display at the Gavilan College Gallery, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., featuring artwork by art educators from Gavilan College and local high schools. Artists exhibiting artwork are Dan Dwyer, Jane Edberg, KC Gonzalez, Jack Johnson, Arthur Juncker, Tim Kelly, Jacqueline Kurtt, Jane Rekedal, Sylvia Rios, Moisés Roizen, Louise Roy and Arturo “r2row” Rosette. Color pencil workshop

GILROY – The City of Gilroy Adult Program introduces an exciting new art class focusing on the versatile medium of colored pencils. The class will meet on Thursday evenings, Feb. 6 through March 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. The beauty of colored pencils is that even though it is a simple medium, it is one that can be applied, blended and manipulated in a variety of ways to create beautiful and imaginative compositions of any subject matter that interests you. Symphony presents concert

GILROY – The next concert for South Valley Symphony will be presented on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Gavilan College Theater with presentations at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tickets are on sale at California Music Company and Porcella’s Music in downtown Gilroy and Snappy Photo at 785 First St. in Gilroy, The Music Tree in Morgan Hill, Terry’s House of Candles in San Juan Bautista and Dorothy McNett’s Place in downtown Hollister.
