Bands test their skills

GILROY – On Friday and Saturday, May 14 and 15, the Gilroy High School Bands will be hosting the California Music Educator’s Association Bay Section Area 8, “Band Festival” in the GHS theater from 4 to 10:30 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Twenty-eight middle school and high school bands are rated on a scale of 1 (superior) to 5 (poor) in their performance and in how well they read new music for the first time by a panel of four judges.

The Gilroy High School Symphonic Band will play at 8:10 p.m. and the Wind Ensemble will play at 9:35 p.m. in the theater on Friday. The performances are free and open to the public. Details: 847-5757

Drunken play

GILROY – The Gavilan College Theatre Arts production of “The Drunkard! or Down With Demon Drink,” directed by Jim Cave encourages audiences to get into the act by dressing up as their favorite hero, heroine or villain. Anyone who shows up for the Saturday performance in costume will gain free admission to the performance.

“The Drunkard” tells the story of Edward, the virtuous, penniless heir of his kindhearted father. One day the villain Squire Cribbs lures Edward into drinking at an Inn and the effects are instantaneous; he becomes a drunkard, consigned to live in poverty. His foster brother William discovers Cribbs’ plans and good triumphs over evil.

Performances are set for Friday, May 14 and Saturday, May 15 at 8 p.m., and are held at the Gavilan College Theater, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. Tickets are $8 for general admission, $7 for students and seniors and $6 for kids 12 and under. For tickets call the Box Office at 846-4973.

Discuss Coyote Valley Plan

SAN JOSE – The Coyote Valley Specific Plan Task Force and Community Workshop will be held on Saturday, May 15 at the Southside Community Center, 5595 Cottle Road, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Workshop will discuss land use and urban form concepts for the Coyote Valley Specific Plan. Graduate with a head start

Writer shares her art

GILROY – Gilroy Writing Project hosts local natural history writer Elizabeth Barratt at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, at the Gilroy Public Library, located at Sixth and Rosanna streets.
